By default, URLs for the content pages you create in Joomla! will be long, complex, and nonsensical. More notably, the default URLs for all your pages will not be Search Engine Friendly. If your hosting plan supports IIS Mod-Rewrite
, you can configure your Joomla! site to generate shorter, Search Engine Friendly URLs.
installation will create a .htaccess file in the root of your Joomla! directory. This .htaccess file includes "rewrite rules" that enables Joomla! to create Search Engine Friendly URLs. You will NOT need to modify this .htaccess file as it will work as-is with the IIS Mod-Rewrite engine installed on your web server.
After you've installed Joomla! (version 1.5) on your site, log on as administrator:

Next, select "Global Configuration" from the main page after logging in.
Once in the Global Configuration Page,
find the "SEO Settings" section, which should be on the right side of the screen.
Choose "Yes" on all three available options: "Search
Engine Friendly URLs", "Use Apache mod_rewrite", and "Add suffix to
Ignore the warning that says "Use Apache mod_rewrite" is only for Apache users. IIS
Mod-Rewrite Pro fully emulates Apache mod_rewrite, so you'll be able to utilize
this option to get full Search Engine Friendly URLs.
If running Joomla 1.0, in the "SEO" section, choose
"Yes" for the fields "Search Engine Friendly URLs", and "Dynamic Page
Titles", so that you enable full Search Engine Friendly URLs. Ignore the warning saying
that the option "Search Engine Friendly URLs" is only for Apache users.
IIS Mod-Rewrite Pro fully emulates Apache mod_rewrite, so you must
enable this option in order to get full Search Engine Friendly URLs.
