When running an online business, driving traffic to your website is essential.
In terms of internet marketing, there are several ways to go about this task. In this article we'll talk about two of the more affective methods, both of which have free, built-in tools for them in the Newtek SiteCenter.
1. Search Engine Optimization
You may have heard the term Search Engine Optimization (SEO) before. SEO is basically the practice of making a website rank higher on search results through search engines like Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft's Bing (Live.com).
For example, if you own a bakery in Denver, your website could receive large amounts of traffic if it ranks among the top search results for "Bakeries in Denver" or "Denver Bakery" (or any similar variation).
The Newtek SiteCenter SEO tool.
The Newtek SiteCenter SEO tool provides you with an easy way to add and/or modify your website's 'meta' data, which includes page titles, page descriptions, and keywords.
Basically, search engines send web crawlers (also referred to as 'bots') to collect the data from websites. This 'meta' data helps search engines index your site better and optimizes your standing on certain web searches. For a helpful guide on understanding what SEO is, and how to effectively optimize your website for search engines, see this comprehensive guide from seo moz.com
To access the Newtek SiteCenter SEO tool, log into your SiteCenter account at http://builder.webcontrolcenter.com.
Once logged in, click the "Goodies & Addons" option.
Then select "Search Engine Optimization" from the list of goodies.
From this page, you will have the option to submit your website to top search engines, which will inform them that your site does exist and that they are able to begin sending web crawlers to your site (*note that you will want to submit your site AFTER you've published and purchased your SiteCenter website. During the free trial, your website is not yet a hosted account nor connected to your domain name
). You will submit your website separately for each of the search engines. There is no fee associated with this service.
You are also able to set the page title, page description, and keywords for each of the pages you've set up on your blog. This will important meta data that the search engines will collect.
Here's a basic example of a page title, page description, and keywords that could be used
Page title, home page: John's Bakery | Denver's finest bakery since 1987
The page title will appear on your web browser, or on your browser's tab depending on which web browser your are utilizing.
Page description, home page: Downtown Denver's original neighborhood bakery serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Fresh artisan breads, bagels, pastries and more for an affordable price.
The page description will not show up anywhere on your website or on the web browser, but it will show up on search results for your website. For example:
Page keywords, home page
: bakery, fresh bread, bagels, deli sandwiches, organic coffee
Keywords, like page descriptions, will not show up anywhere on your website or on the web browser, but are extremely important for web crawlers to find out how to index your website.
2. Content marketing
To put it simply, content marketing involves the creation or sharing of quality content to engage your existing and potential customer bases.
But what do we mean by content?
Content can be anything. It can be helpful advice, it could be quick tips on how to do something, it could be recipes, it could be anything that showcases how your business is the authority in what it does. If you're a baker, you could create content that helps people learn the art of baking.
The platform you'll use to showcase this content is through a blog. See the Newtek Web Services blog post on business blogging to see if this option might right for you
If your plan supports the Newtek SiteCenter blogging feature, you can easily set up a blog through the SiteCenter portal. For instructions on how to do this, please see our KB article on how to add a blog to your site
